Government Acts as Protector
Home Up

Liberals consider the American people to be helpless pawns, buffeted by economic forces they can neither understand nor control. Therefore, they say, we need the government as our shepherd.

Conservatives consider the American people to be unable to lead a moral life without assistance, and whose amorality will surely lead us down a path of destruction. Therefore, they say, we need the government as our shepherd.

Libertarians consider the American people to be adults, responsible for the consequences of their economic and moral choices. Therefore, we need not a shepherd, but only a protector of rights, which is the one legitimate function of government.
