1999-09 Newsletter

Message from the Chair

Our work with the Home Rule Charter Committee to amend the County charter has completed the home stretch. The Supervisor of Elections has certified that all three referendums will appear on the March 2000 ballot. Now we need to get the word out to the voters to vote YES on these issues.

Perhaps you saw the front page article in Florida Today explaining the proposals and some of the County Commissioner's opinions. As usual, our Commissioners are not pleased with the idea of giving the voters more control of how their money is spent. Both of the Commissioners interviewed criticized the proposals and attempted to place them in a negative light. We need to write "Letters to the Editor" and make sure that the voter's side of the story gets told as well.

The LP Florida's Operation Bootstrap is off and running here in Brevard. Operation Bootstrap is the LPF's plan to double the size of the Libertarian Party here in Florida. This is the first part of preparing to reap the benefits of last year's Revision 11 victory.

We'll be seeing more Libertarian candidates on the ballot in 2000 and we must have a party big enough to give them the backing they deserve. The first mailing has been sent to all the registered Libertarians in Brevard who are not already party members. Our telephone volunteers have been making the follow-up phone calls needed to help make this project a success. More mailings and follow-up calls are planned for the future and we need your help. Each volunteer receives a professionally developed manual with all the information you will need to make the calls. In addition, these manuals are a great source of information you can use whenever you are talking to anyone about the Libertarian Party.

Please contact me either by phone at 636-1535 or email at lee@brevard.net if you are willing to make some phone calls and help make this project a success.

--Lee McLamb, Chair, Libertarian Party of Brevard County

The mission of Operation Bootstrap is to double the size of the Libertarian Party of Florida by the year 2000.

The LPB will conduct its monthly social at Perkins Family Restaurant, 8200 N Wickham Rd, Melbourne (752-5200).  Our speaker will be Frank Merceret, former Florida State Prosecutor and current opponent of the War on Drugs.
He views both the current Statist "totalitarian" approach and the proposed Libertarian "anarchist" approach to recreational drug use to be ludicrous, costly, and destructive.  This promises to be a great presentation on "A Rational Drug Policy for America".   Don't miss this thought-provoking, controversial presentation!
