Libertarian Party of Brevard County (LPB)

2000-02 Newsletter

Message from the Chair

The 2000 election year is upon us.  We are already being inundated with coverage of the Republican and Democratic primaries.  Here in Florida, we are hoping to make this the year that voters finally have a Libertarian alternative to the D's and R's.  This is the first major election year since we passed Revision 11.  That means that unequal ballot access laws no longer burden us.  In fact, in past years just getting our presidential candidate on the ballot cost over $100,000 and required a massive expenditure of our volunteers’ time and effort gathering petitions.  Now, thanks to Revision 11, all those resources are available to support more candidates in the local elections.

One of the arguments we presented during the campaign to pass Revision 11 was that voters were being denied the chance to vote for candidates outside the two parties.  While that was true, it only addressed half the problem.  Currently, even with Revision 11, the voters in Brevard will be stuck with the same two major party choices unless you help.  We need candidates to run as Libertarians.

Let's face it: The only way to have a Libertarian government is by voting Libertarians into office.  In this newsletter, we have listed all the positions for which elections will be held this year.  Are you in the right district to run for an office?  Do you know another Libertarian who would be interested in running?  Let's put Revision 11 to work.  Let's put Libertarians on the ballot and elect them to office in 2000.

Mark your calendar for Sunday, March 5 at 3:30 PM.  The Libertarian Party of Brevard County will conduct its next business meeting at Perkins Family Restaurant, 8200 N Wickham Rd, Melbourne.  (Call 321-752-5200 or visit http://maps.yahoo.com for directions.)  We'll examine all the offices up for election in Brevard County, and solicit Libertarian candidates to run for those offices.  We'll also look for volunteers to help with Harry Browne's campaign.

Carefully examine the table.  When you find an office for which you would like to run, contact the Brevard County Supervisor of Elections at (321) 264-6746 to get yourself ready for the race.

 In Liberty,

 Lee McLamb, Chair
