Message from the Chair
All of our projects are certainly keeping us busy
this summer. If we all pitch in we can lay the ground work that will bring us even
greater successes as we begin to make plans for the 2000 election.
Our petition drive with the Home Rule Charter Committee
to amend the County charter is entering the home stretch. Of the 12,500 total
petitions required, 2500 in each County Commission district, we are down to wrapping up
the last of the districts and making sure we have a sufficient "cushion" for
those petitions that get rejected. These petitions will give voters the chance to
require the County Commission to get voter approval before taking more of your money
through additional taxes. By amending the County Charter, we can take control of our
local government right away even before we get a Libertarian majority elected to the
Commission. This is too important to let pass by. Dave Hobbs has been doing a
great job heading up this effort and would love to hear from you. Dave will let you
know what you can do to help take us across the finish line.
We're still working with LP Florida on Operation
Bootstrap. The first mailing has been delayed slightly while the National
Headquarters catches up with the 250,000 inquiries we have received as a result of the
LP's efforts on the "Know Your Customer" banking regulation. Shortly after
the mailing goes out our volunteers will be making follow-up phone calls. We still
need more people to help with this very important project.
By the time you read this, our adopted stretch of
Clearlake Road from Dixon, North to SR524 should look better thanks to our volunteer road
crew. At the time of this writing, our first quarterly trash pick-up day is
scheduled for June 27. These signs are in a high traffic area and let people
know the Libertarian principles are alive and well in Brevard County.
Finally, we're planning our second annual "HUGE
Garage Sale" July 17. Last year we ran out of things to sell before we ran out
of buyers. Let's not let that happen again. Along with the newsletter this
month is a flyer for the sale. Please
feel free to make copies and post them wherever you can. On the back of the flyer
are some guidelines for your donations.
Following these guidelines will be a HUGE help for our volunteers who will be manning the
sales tables.
We've got a lot going on in the next few months.
I've heard some statist types argue that you can't depend on goodwill and volunteers--that
people must be forced to do what's "right". As Libertarians, it is up to
us to demonstrate and prove that the statists are wrong. What better way to start
than by picking an LPB project and volunteering TODAY!
